FCCLA members attend Region IV meeting in Watertown

The Region IV Meeting of Family, Career and Community Leaders of America was held in Watertown at the Ramkota Event Center on December 4, 2019. Twenty students from Redfield FCCLA joined 10 other FCCLA chapters, fellow members, advisers, and guests from the area to partake in the day’s events. FCCLA is the only youth-led organization with family as its central focus. Members learn how to be active community leaders, become caring family members, and prepare for life beyond high school.

This meeting was themed Where Your Leadership Begins.  The purpose of this meeting was for members to compete in STAR Events, run for region office, participate in Leadership Team workshops, and compete in Knowledge Bowl.   Jack Mills competed in Professional Presentations and received a Gold rating and top superior on his presentation and will advance to compete at the State FCCLA meeting in April.

Students also attended workshops created by the State Leadership Teams. These three teams—the Current Trends, National Outreach, and Advocacy—help to educate FCCLA’s members about teen safety, family, and about the FCCLA organization. Breanna Roth represented Redfield on the Advocacy team.  Hannah Owens also presented a workshop on leadership and gave greetings from the National FCCLA.

The 2019 Region IV Executive Council, consisting of President/State Officer Emma Kopplin of Redfield; Vice President Sarah Weisbrod of Clark; Secretary Jack Schultz of Brookings; Treasurer Tianna Tschetter of Doland; and Junior High Representative, Owen Burns of Brookings presided over the meeting.

Several FCCLA members had the opportunity to compete in the quiz bowl competition. The competing members got to show off their knowledge in categories such as personal finance, consumer rights and responsibilities, technology, health and safety, environment, and FCCLA knowledge. Redfield had members participate in the Jr. and Sr. knowledge bowl competitions

The event concluded with the installation of the new 2020 Region IV Executive Council. The candidates took a test, conducted interviews, presented a speech, and submitted an application. The new team is President/State Officer Breanna Roth of Redfield; Vice President Sarah Weisbrod of Clark; Secretary Jack Schultz of Brookings; Treasurer Teagan Miller of Webster; and Junior High Representative Sara Thonvold of Clark. These officers will represent Region IV at the South Dakota FCCLA State Meeting in April. They will also preside over next year’s region meeting.
