Ag in the classroom

Posted: Thursday, May 2nd, 2013

Lindsey Haskell reading “Livi’s Lost Calf” in the classroom. DEREK KEELING | REDFIELD PRESS

On March 21 Lindsey Haskell presented Ag in the classroom to Redfield Elementary students.

The purpose of the visit from Haskell was to educate students on how livestock producers care for their animals. Haskell brought in cattle ear tags and ear tag applicator to demonstrate how an ear tag is put on a cow.

Haskell also brought in a book called “Levi’s Lost Calf.” The book is about Levi, who rides out one morning to bring the cattle home from the pasture. After a head count, Levi is surprised that one calf is missing. Little Red, his favorite heifer calf, is nowhere to be found. Determined to prove his independence and locate Little Red, Levi rides out with his horse, Pepper, and Gus, his trusty dog. The three sleuths search high and low around the ranch for the calf. Little Red stays hidden as readers are introduced to a bevy of barnyard animals throughout the search.

Haskell also asked the student to write on a K.W.L. table about farming. K.W.L. is for what students, in the course of a lesson, already know, want to know, and ultimately learn. A KWL table is typically divided into three columns titled Know, Want and Learned.

After reading “Levi’s Lost Calf” to the students Haskell asked the students to read from their K.W.L tables. The students presented her with basic information about what they wanted to know about farming.

Haskell left the cattle ear tags with the students to take home. Students further discussed the book and farming with their teacher after Haskell left.
