National Geographic Geography Bee State level participants

Bennett Osborn, sixth grade, and Kasey Schutte ,7th grade, competed in the State Level of the National Geographic Geography Bee held Friday, April 5th on the NSU campus.

Students from across the state gathered at Northern State University to compete in the contest, which was hosted by the NSU Honors Program and NSU College of Arts and Sciences. Students had to win at their local school and then take a test to qualify for the state competition.

The state winner was Mark Vanderzee from George S. Mickelson Middle School in Brookings. The eighth-grader will represent the state at the 25th annual National Geographic Bee, which will be May 20-22 in Washington, D.C. A $25,000 college scholarship is at stake. The final round will be moderated by ‘‘Jeopardy!’’ host Alex Trebek.
