Jim Coats, age 65, Doland, died peacefully surrounded by family members on Saturday, April 6, 2013 in the Avera McKennan Hospital at Sioux Falls after a long illness.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, April 10, 2013 from 5-8 PM with a public prayer service at 7PM all in the Furness Funeral Home Chapel at Clark and will continue after 9AM on Thursday at the Church in Doland.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, April 11, 2013 at 10:30 AM in the United Methodist Church at Doland with the Reverendís Kris Larson and Harold Loewen officiating. The organist will be Deb Schroeder with Rory Troske as soloist. The casketbearers will be Ken & Milo Hiles, Larry Coats, Randy Hansen, Corry Nelson, Dale Martian and Tim and Steve Mehlberg. Burial will follow in the Doland Cemetery. There will be a lunch served at the R-Place in Doland following the burial.
He was born James Leslie Coats on March 17, 1948 at Miller, SD, the son of Francis and Gleo (Roberts) Coats. The family moved later that year to a farm near Doland. Jim attended school at Doland graduating from Doland High School in 1966 and then continued farming with his dad.
On July 1 of 1967 he was united in marriage to Chris Thompson at Doland. To this union 4 children, James, Shelley, John and Erin, were born.
Jim married Jane Mehlberg on August 14, 1982 at Raymond and to this union 2 children, Jennifer and Josh, were born.
Jim has been a farmer all of his life, loving the land, raising cattle and hogs. In addition to farming, Jim was very proud to say he was a blade and equipment operator for Ken Hiles Construction and since 1997, he was a blade operator for Spink County Highway Department retiring in November of 2012.
He was also very active in many community affairs, serving on the Belle Blaine Township Board for many years, the Doland School Board for 25 years Ė serving as President, enjoyed bowling, hunting, softball, car races and being an avid fan of the Minnesota Twins and Vikings. Second to none though was his love of family, spending countless hours with all of his children and grandchildren, attending their school events and being a proud supporter of Doland High School and all of itís events.
Preceding him in death was his mother, Gleo, his father-in-law, Clarence Mehlberg and a brother-in-law, Richard Martian.
Grateful for having shared in his life is his wife Jane Coats of Doland, his father, Francis Coats of Doland, mother-in-law, Eleanor Mehlberg of Raymond, children, James (Lisa) Coats of Huron, Shelley Coats of Doland, John (Susan) Coats of Brookings, Erin Coats (Brian Ellison) of Aberdeen, SD, Jennifer Coats of Mitchell and Josh Coats (Bailey Hurlbert) of Doland, 7 grandchildren, Stephanie, Samantha, Kannon, Kimberly, Payton, Aries and Kailea and a sister, Cheri Martian of Trail City, SD.
