Eastern Star and Star Court Suites News

Robert George of Frankfort was the lucky winner of the $1000 Blackout Grand Prize at the Yelduz Shrine Foot Patrol Super Bingo. The semi-annual event was held on March 3rd at the Shrine Center in Aberdeen. Pictured with George are Kevin Harr and Doug Miller, two of the Redfield area Foot Patrol members. All Shrine groups exist to support the work of the Shriners Hospitals in America.

The past week was a walk back in time as former Eastern Star Home Activity Director Sheryl Kloss filled in for vacationing Lisa Haigh. Lisa will return this week and she and Wendi will no doubt have some interesting stories to tell about their cruise to Honduras, Guatemala and Mexico.

We dedicated two afternoons this week to helping three special ladies celebrate their birthdays. Mary Rose Avery turned 84 on Tuesday, March 12th with a number of her family members present to join in her party. She chose sandwiches and chips to be served as refreshments. Wednesday, March 13th found us using two dining rooms to serve the guests of Ruth Yada and Jane Robertson. They also had many friends and relatives present to join in their celebrations. Ninety-six root beer floats were served using six buckets of ice cream and eleven 2-liter bottles of pop. Everyone enjoyed the fellowship and refreshments.

Prior to Bingo on Monday afternoon, we joined Forrest Preston in listening to his DVD on the Solar System. This is part of a college course that he has been enjoying over the past several months. This goes to prove that we’re never too old to learn!

Maxine Stemper and Sheryl hosted our monthly Cooking Class on Thursday. Everyone got in the act as we made Shamrocks by joining yogurt pretzels together with almond bark and outlining them with green frosting. Next each of us made our own Pistachio Pudding by place ¼ cup of milk and a tablespoon of pudding in a zip lock bag. After shaking it, rolling it and squeezing it for a few minutes we were able to enjoy it! We also feasted on some green cake cookies which were a treat from Max as she tried out yet another new recipe.

Friday afternoon Anna made popcorn in our new machine while Sheryl read to us from the FARM & RANCH Magazine. A nice group of residents came out to reminisce about these stories. These magazines were recently donated to us and we really appreciate them. We could also use recent large print copies of the READERS DIGEST.

Our Trivia Phrase for the week was “Catch A…..”. After some serious pondering we thought of “CATCH A FALLING STAR AND PUT IT IN YOU POCKET” by Perry Como.

We invite anyone with an interest in hand quilting to join our ladies in the “Link” between Court B and Court C. You are welcome to come anytime of the day, but there are usually a few ladies quilting right after noon lunch. We are just about finished with the one on the rack and are excited to put another one on. The pool table in our Link is also waiting for any adult that would like to practice for a tournament to be announced in the near future.
