Cement truck wreaks havoc on street

Posted: Thursday, Oct 4th, 2012

Jameson Todd Nelsonís 2002 KW cement truck tipped onto its side as Nelson tried to turn west onto Hwy 212. Here the vehicle is being winched so the response team can attempt to flip the truck back onto its wheels to be prepared for removal. The emergency crew added loose sand in hopes of preventing any oil or gas spills onto the road. CYNTHIA LAMBERT | REDFIELD PRESS

On Wednesday, September 12 at 11:40 a.m. a 2002 KW cement truck heading south attempted to turn west onto Hwy. 212 when the truck began to tip. The truck landed on the driverís side and skidded across the road, eventually coming to rest in both lanes of traffic.

The cement truck spilled some of its load onto the highway. The highway was closed for several hours as a crew attempted to clean the mess and prevent the cement from hardening.

Traffic was diverted through the old Saks parking lot allowing drivers to detour around the accident.

Two heavy-duty tow trucks were called in to assist with the removal of the downed truck. One tow truck pulled the undercarriage of the truck while the other lifted its tow arm that was wrapped around the cement mixer. After successfully tipping the truck onto its wheels the truck was removed from the scene.

The driver of the truck, Jameson Todd Nelson, 26, of Aberdeen, wasnít wearing a seatbelt and received serious, non-life threatening injures due to the accident. He was taken to Community Memorial Hospital and then air-lifted to Avera St. Lukeís, where he was treated and released within the day.

Spink County Sheriffís Office, Redfield Emergency Medical Service, Redfield Fire Department, and South Dakota Transportation Department all assisted.

The South Dakota Hwy Patrol is investigating the incident. Charges are pending against the driver for possible misconduct and hazardous driving.
