New Kesslers store payment received

Posted: Thursday, Oct 4th, 2012

Putting an end to the speculation and wonder in the area, the Redfield City Council received a check in the amount of $125,000 to complete the purchase of lots 1-14 in Block 23 of the Western Town Lot in Redfield located one city block south of Chrystal’s. The check was presented to the City from Kesslersby Grow Spink Board member Dick Gallup who said, “

Redfield area citizens first learned of the interest to build a second store in Redfield by the Aberdeen based business when a hearing was set to consider granting a Package Off-Sale Liquor License to Timothy Kessler, owner of Kessler’s Grocery in Aberdeen since the late 1980’s when he purchased the business from his father.

At the hearing held Monday, April 16 the Redfield City Council voted unanimously to approve the application. At that time, Timothy Kessler informed those present that Kessler’s was excited about the opportunity to come to Redfield and said they were looking at building a 20-30 thousand square foot store in the location. However, since that time, things have remained pretty quiet much to the curiosity of local residents.

Repeated phone calls to Reed Kessler of Kesslers Grocery have gone unreturned. However, in April of 2012 an Aberdeen American News story by BY JEFF NATALIE-LEES jnatalie-lees@aberdeennews.com contained the following:

“Kessler’s plans to build a new grocery store in Redfield along U.S. Highway 281.

This will be the second store for Kessler’s, which has operated a grocery store in Aberdeen since 1939.

“This is an exciting opportunity for us,” said Tim Kessler, president of Kessler’s. “We have had a lot of inquiries about opening a store in Redfield. I think the timing is right.”

The store, which will sell food and liquor, will likely be about one-third of the size of the 60,000-squarefoot Aberdeen store, he said. On Monday, the Redfield City Council voted unanimously to grant Kessler’s a packaged off-sale liquor license.

It is expected the new building will be completed sometime in the early part of 2013, assuming all arrangements go smoothly, Kessler said.

“We are still in the planning stage and performing due diligence,” he said.

For now, Redfield residents will just have to wait and see what steps will be taken next and when construction will begin.
