Memorial Day Services held on Sunday, May 27 in Doland at the Hubert H. Humphrey Gymnasium were well attended.

Gordon Richard was the Master of Ceremonies. Dirby Bawek, son of Dan and LeAnn Bawek, and Madison Nuttall, daughter of Steve and Jennifer Nuttall, read their Americanism Poems as both took second place at the District Level.

Don Mendel was the speaker. His speech was entitled, ”What’s so Great About America?” Don expanded on how America is the most powerful nation in the world, but it came at a cost. As we remember those who have lost their lives, we realize that freedom is definitely not free. Kelley Dennison read the names of the fallen soldiers through the different wars.

Libby Miles, daughter of Jeff and Jodie Miles, read her Americanism Essay, which took first place at the local level. The Community Choir sang.

After the Retirement of Colors, we ventured to the Doland Cemetery for the placing of the wreaths. The wreaths were placed by several students. Jason Mendel and Judy Mayer played Taps. Following the cemetery ceremony, we headed to the Doland Heritage Wall for a dedication of a Veteran Tribute. Gordon Richard said a few words and the wall dedicated to the Veterans was unveiled. A lunch provided by the Doland Legion Auxiliary was held at the Doland Senior Center.
