Jamez McNutt left for Boys State, which was held in Aberdeen, SD, on May 27th and was entered into Journalism City. While attending Journalism City I learned a lot about writing and journalism. During the week, the Journalism City crew was always hard at work putting together a paper for the day (they ranged from 7 to 10 pages). It was always a rush to get the articles and paper done, but we finished in a reasonable time. While attending Journalism City I was elected Editor-in-Chief, which is the highest position you can obtain while working for The Sunshine Scribe. As Editor-in-Chief I got to interview several high political figures including: Senator John Thune, Chief of Staff Dusty Johnson, and State Supreme Court Chief Justice David Gilbertson. While at Journalism City I also got to meet Governor Dennis Daugaard and Representative Kristi Noem.
At the last assembly I was called out into the hallway, along with several other people attending Boys State. We were put into a line and led behind the stage at the Johnson Fine Art Center. I would be the first person to go onto stage and accept an award. When my name was called I walked out on stage and collected my award. Once I got back to my seat I read on my award that I was entitled to a scholarship for my first year of college of choice.
My experience at Journalism City was great! I know how to write effective papers which will help me when applying for scholarships this next year and also during my future college years. I feel it has also helped me broaden my vocabulary which will help me with my acting career.
I would like to thank Bill Troske and the rest of the Conde American Legion for entering me in this program, as it was a great honor. It was Christmas time when Bill had asked me if I was going to Boys State. I told him no and that I wasn’t really into government. He then asked me if I would be interested in Journalism City, I said that it sounded like fun and I would be very interested in going.
I had a lot of fun and I would be excited to go again! It is a great learning experience that will help me in my future years. Thank you again for the honor of representing your post.
