Out of the 538 electoral votes possible to garner in the upcoming presidential election and at least 270 needed to win, I predict that the contest will be very close and Mr. Obama will win. SAVE YOUR "LETTERS TO THE EDITOR" I am joking and just trying to gather your attention. If I have it, I would like to reminisce about my Mom's cooking on the farm of my youth. My mouth is already seemingly salivating as I savor the many goodies she served to three hungry persons. Dinner was ALWAYS at high noon, and supper was at 6:00 P.M. (except during harvest season when a snack would be delivered at about 5:00 P.M.and supper would be maybe just before the sun went down. These were SOME of my favorites: Fried chicken with brown rice and onions. Wow. The white meat was most preferred by all. Sister Bonnie and I would get some; Dad would get some along with the thighs and drumsticks. Mom said that she liked the neck the best, but I know for sure that she was pleased to pass on the other meat just to please her family. Goulash made with hamburger, onions, paprika and other "Mom secrets."
At least four "helpings" for the Perm. Fresh corn on the cob with real butter and salt and pepper. I think that my record is four ears at one sitting!! Canned beets. I actually hated them as a youngster, but now just love them. Grandma and Mom's dill pickles. And the pickle juice. Dad and I would fight over that even knowing that it was all salt. But we needed some salt as we constantly perspired throwing wet alfalfa bales into the trailer. Fresh sliced cucumbers with vinegar and cream and onions. Fresh tomatoes with vinegar and onions. BLTs with fresh bacon from the farm, tomatoes and lettuce from the garden. fresh home-made bread and Miracle Whip. Pancakes with syrup. French toast with syrup. Last but surely not least and the spelling may be way wrong because it is a German dish: "schtillim and some breadish stuff" with cream and onions. There were a lot more luscious foods, but I think that you get the picture, even when Mitt Romney wins a very close election in November. The last line was added just to see if you were paying attention! By the way, my wife, MP, does a fabulous job cooking to satisy my ever-longing taste buds!
