Eastern Star Home News

If you grew up in a Norwegian family you can remember when coffee was king, and tea was for the sick, the wimps and town women who thought they were from Hollywood. You would also have enjoyed Scandinavian Day at the Eastern Star Home the past Monday. We talked about lutefisk and lefse and listened to many interesting stories from the book SECOND HELPINGS of CREAM and BUTTER by Janet Letnes Martin and Allen Toodnem.
Tuesday we helped Tom Anderson celebrate his 90th birthday with a party in our dining room. In addition to his wife, Gail, Tom was happy to have friends from Miller in attendance at the party.
Wayne and Rita Nelson (and great granddaughter Olivia Rice) were our Bingo callers on Wednesday afternoon. We thank them for volunteering at short notice as our special music was cancelled due to the weather. Wayne works at our facility each weekday morning through the Experience Works program and is a great asset to our Home.
Our Creative Writing class on Thursday proved that many of our residents, though elderly, have vivid imaginations. Our beginning topic was “The thing he coveted most was…” The most popular responses were love, family, friends and children. Exercises like this help to keep our minds active and challenged.
We spent a leisurely Friday afternoon with coffee chatter while listening to recorded musical selections by the late Raymond Tjarks. It seems that we can never play too much Bingo and we thank Rita Kissner for being our caller on Saturday afternoon. The candy bars were a sweet surprise for us.
This week we look forward to music with Ray Ernster following the reading of the REDFIELD PRESS on Wednesday afternoon, Hodge Podge Day on Thursday and Happy Hour on Friday. We hope you will come and join in the fun!
