Doland Study Club met
Posted: Thursday, Feb 4th, 2010
Eight members of the Doland Study Club met at the home of Mary La Brie on January 18, 2010. President Lillie Bucholz opened the meeting with the recitation of the Mary Stewart Collect. Lillie reported that the SD Humanities Council is not going to sponsor the “Big Read” this year, so the Doland Study Club made the decision to sponsor a “Community Read” for the month of February. A motion passed to order 20 copies of the book, My Antonia, by Willa Cather, from the SD Humanities Council. It is a classic historical novel about homesteaders in Nebraska. Anyone in the community interested in being a part of this “Community Read” should contact Lillie at the Sherwood Memorial Library in Doland.
Bonnie Barz read excerpts of poetry from the book, Poetry and Prose of the Stelle Sisters which was compiled by the Stelle sisters’ nieces, Bonnie Beebe Barz and her sister, Alice C. Beebe. Bonnie has fond memories of her aunts, Elsie, Opal and Vena. All three aunts were talented in writing, however Elsie, especially, wrote many poems, stories, and plays for special events in the Mellette community. Following Bonnie’s entertaining program the ladies enjoyed a tasty piece of apple pie served by our hostess. The next meeting will be held on February 15 at 7:30 at the Sherwood Memorial Library with the library board giving the program.
