South Dakota is making it easier for the public to view court cases with the addition of public access terminals.
The public access terminals (PAT) are something every county is having added to their courthouses. Each county recieves a PAT in a speific order. Spink County now has their own.
Located in the Clerk of Courts office, the PAT allows the public to perform research within the Statewide Odyssey Case Management System.
The Odyssey System allows the public to look up court cases, but only if the user has the case number. If a user does not have the case number, they will need to come to the counter and request the number. Record seraching fees may apply when requesting a case number.
When looking up a case, the Clerk of Courts asks that users limit their time to 15 minutes if others are waiting to use the terminal.
If users want to print documents you must not only have the case number, but you must also pay 20 cents per page.
There are limitations to what the public can view and print. Confidential cases, sealed cases, closed cases, and juvenile cases are not available. The public is instructed to contact the Clerk of Courts for these cases.
There are websites that are available to search for cases as well that encompass every facet of court cases and records. Contact the Clerk of Courts for these websites: 472-4535.For the complete article see the 07-31-2013 issue.
