Cherie Lou (Robinson) Lunstrum, 59, of Redfield, SD, passed away peacefully and surrounded by her loving family on Monday, August 7, 2023, at Avera St. Luke’s Hospital in Aberdeen, SD.  Cherie’s final act of kindness was to give the gift of life through organ and tissue donation.

Visitation, with family present, will be 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, August 15, at Hyke Funeral Home in Redfield.  Her memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, August 16, at the Redfield United Methodist Church in Redfield.  Pastor Melissa Rowenhorst will officiate.  Lunch and fellowship will follow in the church hall.

Cherie’s service will be live-streamed on the funeral home’s website below her obituary.  Hyke Funeral Home is honored to be entrusted with arrangements (www.hykefuneralhome.com).

Cherie was born on March 27, 1964, the 5th child to Dean and Geraldine (Krohmer) Robinson in Redfield. She grew up on a farm just west of Frankfort, SD enjoying the simple pleasures of the time. Helping with chores, weeding the garden, playing softball and, being the youngest, the target of quite a few pranks by older siblings kept her busy. Cherie attended public school in Redfield and graduated in 1982. She then attended college majoring in music and graduated with a BS in Secondary Education from Northern State University in 1986. She married Clark Lunstrum on July 18, 1986 and began her teaching career that fall. She taught both instrumental and vocal music. She had a wonderfully successful teaching career touching the lives of hundreds of students in Miller, Cresbard, Hitchcock, Tulare, Northwestern, and finally K-12 vocal music in Redfield.  During her 33 years of teaching, she inspired many students to be and do their best, not just in music, but in life. She had a profound impact on many students. She had the ability to scold an elementary student one minute and they’d give her a big hug on the way out the door the next. Many high school students told her she was their favorite teacher – not because she let them get by with something, but because she demanded excellence. She truly cared about them and wanted them to succeed.

She enjoyed life to the fullest. She did everything all in at 100% be it work or play. She enjoyed visiting new places especially as the passenger/navigator on big motorcycle camping trips to the mountains. Since retirement in 2019, she looked forward to camping at Hart Ranch in the Black Hills for a large portion of the summer. She loved riding the winding roads of the Black Hills during the day and relaxing outside the camper with a beverage and music in the evening. She knew the words to every pop song that came on the radio. She loved reading, gardening, crafting, and watching her favorite TV shows. She especially loved being a mom to her two girls, Becca and Leah, and her two stepchildren, Trina and Trenton. She loved finding the perfect birthday and Christmas presents for them and her five grandchildren.

Cherie was preceded in death by her parents Dean and Geraldine. She is survived by her husband of 37 years Clark, daughter Becca (partner Mark Sweeney) of Moscow, ID, daughter Leah of Chicago, IL, step-daughter Trina (Steve) Volk of Vancouver, WA, and step-son Trenton (Stephanie) Lunstrum of White Bear Lake, MN. She is also survived by her sisters: Penney Robinson of Frankfort, Tracy (Sylvester) Clark of Sioux Falls, SD, Valerie (Russell) Johnson of Sioux Falls, and brother Monte (Marilyn) Robinson of Milbank, SD. She is also survived by five grandchildren: Logan Volk, Aislyn Volk, Cooper Lunstrum, Jack Lunstrum, and Ty Lunstrum, as well as many nieces and nephews.
